Niche Picking: Finding a Profitable Niche for Your Website
By Lisa Caraffi, Affiliate Network Manager
One of the most frustrating exercises for an internet marketer can, often times, be the task of picking the right niche. In general, there are two ways to go about deciding on a niche for your website or blog, depending on the reason that your site was designed. For example, a person who decides to create a blog about a particular topic because they are knowledgeable on a particular subject have very different ways of deciding a niche than someone whose sole purpose for creating a site is to make money. Here are some ways in which you can decide on your niche.
If the purpose of your blog is to talk about a particular subject, meet other people who share your interest, and to make a little money, you should think about the following things.
Decide what it is that you enjoy talking about. If you are passionate about, for example, antique watches, then you may decide to create a blog about the mechanics of antique watches as well as upcoming exhibits and the other variousaspects of collecting watches. Remember, a successful website is well maintained and updated frequently. So, if you think you will lose interest in the niche, perhaps that niche isn’t the right one for you.
Ask yourself, “How much do I know about this Topic?” – It is not enough to enjoy a particular topic and have a ’surface’ knowledge when your website is centered around that subject. Say you decide to start a blog about watches because you saw some at an antique show and thought they were really cool. If you don’t know much about them or if you do very little research, your readers will know and they will be sure to correct any misinformation. Also, if you have limited knowledge of a subject, the chance of you being able to write a blog consistently, with quality content, will prove to be a challenge.
If the purpose of your website is strictly to make money then the criteria changes a bit. Ultimately, the main objective for this site is to sell what is “hot”. There are several things you can do before picking a niche and plenty of ways to do the research. If you are observant and persistent you will find a niche that can make a nice stream of income for you.
If you belong to a network, the first call you will want to make is to your affiliate manager. He or she will know what verticals are making affiliates money and they are generally happy to tell you about their best converting offers.
Take advantage of tools like Wordtracker and Google trends to determine search volumes. When doing this, make sure that you are not just looking at the search volume of a particular keyword. Pay attention to the depth of your results to see how far you can go with a particular topic and how many keywords you can effectively target for traffic.
Be observant. Watch trends in the media, particularly magazines and television to determine what it is “hot” and creating a buzz. Don’t worry about picking niches that may be just fads, embrace it. There is no rule that says that you must only have one site and successful affiliates know that they need to be on the cutting edge of what is “now”. That means that they will promote a product or service as long as it is profitable but they know that they must always be looking for the next thing.
Spy on the competition. Do a search with your niche keywords and see what the organic results are doing. This is a great way to get new ideas for content and to spot trends in your niche.
Picking a profitable niche can be a challenge but keep in mind your main objective. Also, keep in mind that what will separate you from the competition is quality content. So whether you are starting a website to expand your knowledge and meet people with similar interests or to simply to make money, it is important to do your homework, keep an eye on the newest trends and most importantly, have fun!
